Ambushed by Possums in Victoria

Possum Ambush at Wannon Falls, Victoria

We headed out of Adelaide, through McClaren Vale wine country and ended up at a place called Tailem Town (in a separate post).

The next day we went to Coonawarra wine region and did a bit of a tour of some wineries there, as it was cold and raining. We got ove the border and stayed a great free campspot called Wannon Falls. We set up camp and went for a walk. We saw the waterfall and read a sign about the “Powerful Owl” which eats possums. That night we were cooking and the gas ran out. With a half cooked dinner I remembered I has some firewood in the back of the van so we went up to the communal fireplace where there tables, chairs and a traditional oven and things to cook with. Within a few minutes a possum is jumping on the table where our things are. I shoowed him away but he wouldn’t go. So I had to chase him away. Anthea was in hysterics, but as one possum scurried into the dark, another was creeping her way. We were surrounded by possums. We ended up cooking the dinner back to back as a kind of possum patrol for each other. I chased one up the roof of the fireplace. They wouldn’t give up. Anthea was too scared to go back to the van incase one went inside the van. They are nice creatures, but only if they keep their distance!

Last night we did shopping to do a 3 day hike in the Grampians National Park. We packed our packs today but there is forecast of rain today and tomorrow so we’ll postpone our walk until Wednesday. That means we’ll get to see Melbourne Cup.

1st October

Tonight we were prepared for the possums. We stayed by the van. At about 9pm they ventured down the trunks. This possum had a passenger on her back. The baby possum was pretty big, with it’s tailed hooked around mother’s tail. Another mother with a much smaller baby on her back also visited us. These possums were still very much very curious creatures, but I managed to confine them to the bending tree trunks where we could take photos of them, without losing track of their whereabouts.
